Best Practice คือ วิธีปฏิบัติที่เป็นเลิศ ในการทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งให้สำเร็จ ซึ่งเป็นผลมาจาก การนำความรู้ไปปฏิบัติจริง แล้วสรุปความรู้และประสบการณ์นั้น เป็นแนวปฏิบัติที่ดีที่สุดของตนเอง Best Practice จึงเป็น
บทสรุปของวิธีการปฏิบัติที่เป็น Tacit Knowledge (ความรู้ใน ตัวคน) ซึ่งเผยแพร่เป็น Explicit Knowledge (ความรู้ที่ปรากฏให้เห็นชัดแจ้งในรูปแบบต่างๆ) เพื่อให้ผู้อื่นได้นำไปทดลองปฏิบัติ
Best Practice มีความสำคัญอย่างไร
จากหลักการที่ว่า “ถ้าได้นำความรู้ไปใช้ ความรู้นั้น ก็ยิ่งเพิ่มคุณค่า เพราะทำให้เกิด การต่อยอดความรู้ให้แตกแขนงออกไปอย่างกว้างขวาง” ดังนั้น เป้าหมายสำคัญประการหนึ่ง ของการจัดการความรู้ในองค์กร คือ เพื่อให้คนในองค์กร มี Best Practice ในการทำงานที่ ช่วยเพิ่มผลผลิตทั้งในด้านคุณภาพและปริมาณ ดังคำกล่าวของ Peter Senge ที่ว่า ความรู้ คือ ความสามารถในการทำอะไรก็ตาม อย่างมีประสิทธิผล (Knowledge is the capacity for effective actions
คำที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียงกับ Best Practice
Good Practice เป็นคำที่มีความหมายค่อนข้างกว้าง ใช้ในความหมายเกี่ยวกับการ ปฏิบัติงานที่มีประสิทธิภาพ แต่ยังไม่มีหลักฐานแน่ชัด หรือแสดงความถูกต้องอย่างชัดเจน จะต้องใช้ข้อมูลเชิงประจักษ์มายืนยันผลงาน และมีผู้ให้ความเห็นเกี่ยวกับ Good Practice คือ
· เป็นข้อเสนอแนะ คำแนะนำ แนวทาง การปฏิบัติงานที่อยู่บนพื้นฐานของความสำเร็จของงาน
· เป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับ “Why” และ “What”
· เป็นความคาดหวังของการปฏิบัติงานโดยทั่ว ๆ ไป
Innovative Practice หมายถึง จุดเน้นและแนวทางการทำงานที่น่าสนใจ แต่ขณะนี้
ยังไม่มีตัวชี้วัดใดจะบอกความสำเร็จได้

การจัดการความรู้เพื่อพัฒนาการเรียนการสอน ควรจะเริ่มต้นจากการค้นหา รวบรวม Best Practice
ด้านการสอนในกลุ่มสาระต่างๆ จากครูที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญ เช่น ครูแห่งชาติ ครู ต้นแบบ ครูแกนนำหรือครูดีเด่นในวิชาต่างๆ เพื่อให้ครูเหล่านั้น ได้ถ่ายทอดความเชี่ยวชาญไปสู่ครู อื่นๆ เพื่อเป็นเครือข่าย
